Good sand

Does anyone know where to get pool filter sand or have any experience using the coral sand sold from home depot?

Aloha fishkeeper01,

You might want to try Mr. Sandman out in Mapunapuna area. Not sure if they are still there, but prices good. Only bad thing is the don't have weekend hours and regular business hours so you gonna have to take off work to get stuff from them! Just make sure that you wash the sand A LOT before using it!!!

Mr. Sandman

Aloha fishkeep01,

Not sure if it's too late, but you might want to see if someone can take you down there while on Spring Break! You could probably buy the same from a machine shop that does sand blasting (really fine sand), but expect to pay a lot more and possibly have more crap to wash out of the sand! I hope that this helps!

I got some pool filter sand when I set up a 150g from a place on Kam highway between Aiea and PC. I think it is called Gemini Pool and Spa. It's just west of BK on the mauka side. It was a nice silica sand #20 or #40, I forget what the screening was, but about the same as play sand. I think I paid $12 for a 50lb bag. If you want play sand, I was able to pick up a 50lb bag at Ace in Kapolei for $7 or so a couple of weeks ago. They may still have some left. If Ace doesn't have ps, you might also try kmart in the same area. I also bought ps from them too and it was about the same price, $6-7 or so. I haven't used the coral sand that HD offers since I didn't want my water parameters to become too hard. Good luck!

Because it would take longer to wash out the sand from the beach than just buying it. The only time you could use sand from the beach is for a saltwater tank.

You should still wash your sand even if you are buying it.

I've used both play sand and silica sand. Haven't had any problems yet.

Only thing with silica is that's it kind of fine and can get suck up easily while vacuuming the tank. But was really cheap, $20 for 100 lb.

I second sandman. Waited for a day off from school and went. Amazing price for the amount.

Selection is also good. Different grian size and a pretty good selection of colors.
