Aquatic plants in the Gainesville area?

I'm super new to this so I hope you'll forgive me if I ask a stupid noob question...

Right now all my Betta has in his Fluval Spec 2g are a wee java fern growing on a bit of driftwood and a small anubia, both of which I got from a friend. I don't want to keep poaching his plants so I started looking around for a store that sold live plants. So far PetSmart is the only place I've seen live plants, and while it's great that they come with a snail free guarantee, the selection is rather limited.

The LFS has pond plants for sale, and even though several of their tanks are planted they don't actually sell any of those plants - not even cuttings - and the one nursery in town that used to sell them has moved to I don't know where. Is there a store I've overlooked, or is online my best option?

You've got my favorite plant vendor, GLA!
Gainsville is home to GreenLeafAquariums, check out their site. I'm sure you can pick up an order, give them a call, very friendly bunch too.

Okay, thanks for the link. ^_^ Right now they seem to be out of stock of everything. Do they restock fairly often?

They do normally. Or contact them via their site and ask, they have great customer service.

Orlando, the owner of GLA, is an awesome guy. Their stock is also impressively healthy. I'm in Gainesville too, by the way!

I like creepy things, vines included.

Oh, and Aquatropics has some too but I would recommend GLA over them. I've had mixed experiences with Aquatropics...

What LFS are you referring to? The only one I know of does sell plants, but ya gotta be careful what you buy.
PM me if don't want to mention name publicly.

My Betta came from there. He's a rather unusually coloured fellow, and looked very sad in his little cup, which is how I wound up with him. The jury's still out as to whether he's a healthy boy or not. He's torn his tail on his driftwood so that's apparently going to have to come out and be replaced with something less dangerous. >_<

All my bettas have driftwood in their tanks. You just need to be mindful of sharp edges and such.

The driftwood also came from one of my friend's tanks. It doesn't have any sharp edges, per se, but there are a couple of irregularly shaped holes that might have looked like good places to hide to Zafanelli...just not to his tail. He lives on my desk at work so I'm not sure what he gets up to on Sundays.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and the link to GLA. ^_^ I can see that I have a lot to learn and a lot of work to do on Zafanelli's tank!

Bacopa and Ludwigia, right off SW 23rd Drive and Archer. There's a little natural pond loaded, some Riccia in there also and perhaps another 3-4 species.

Cost: free.

Most road side ditches will have aquatic weeds, mermaid weed is very common in the winter.

Regards,
Tom Barr

Yeah I used to go to lake Alice, they had some hair grass growing by the edge.

Aquatropics has some nice plant selection, they're not in great health but they're good plants with some TLC.
Check out Orlando's GLA shop, its a great place and he's super nice!!
