Downtown Aquarium Denver

I'm going to Colorado on vacation in July and thought about making the trip to Denver to let my kids see the Downtown Aquarium but thought I would see what other people thought about this place first. My 8 year old son picked up a brochure last year when we were out there and found it this week and asked if we could go this year. We will be staying in Loveland and Estes Park but don't mind driving to Denver if this place is worth the trip. What do you people that live in Colorado that have been here think of this place?

I personally like going there. It is not that big, but if your in the area its worth the trip. The best idea would be to go eat at the restaurant and then go tour the displays (the blackened tilapia is AWSOME!). They have a pretty nice Rainbow tank

The best though is the 30,000 gal. salt water tank.

Take in the Denver zoo if you have time as well. It is one of the best in the nation. They have a good amount of aquatics to in the "tropical discovery" building.

I was there recently for the second time since they opened. It is worth the admission price and I also recommend the restaurant (we were there at about 4pm on a Thursday so it was quiet). I had the Tempura Mahi Mahi; was pretty good!

They have very interesting shallow coral tanks with excellent stock! I also enjoyed thier mammoth saltwater display tank. Sawtooth shark awwwe yeah. We witnessed one of thier Sea Turtles bully a shark and another one got the attention of the genleman feeding the eels by nibbling on his forehead....Ouch. They also have a decent stock of saltwater Cardinal fish (so pretty) and quite a few different inverts.

I recommend you schedule a few hours at least so you can just sit and watch all the interactions.

I guess the other thing I should add, if you can go in the later evening say after dinner. Its much more calm, and you can take your time. During the afternoon and early evening it can be a zoo in there with tons of people.

Thanks for the tips. We will be going in the middle of July and be in Colorado from Wed. to Sun. so it will more than likely be on a Thursday that we go. I have been to the Denver zoo a couple of times but the last time was about 15 years ago. We are going to our yearly trip to the Omaha Henrly Doorly zoo next weekend so the Denver zoo might not get on the schedule this year although I would like to go back to see how it has changed. I was planning on eating in the restaurant at the aquarium and I might need an adult beverage after riding in the car with the kids. There is so many things I like to do when in Colorado and never enough time. 2 days in Rocky Mountain National Forest is never enough. Last year my daughter was only 1 and didn't like the pressure from the altitude when going over the pass so it wasn't a very fun ride. Hopefully she does better this time.

No that's not why I will be there but thanks for sharing that so I definitely know I won't be going on the 19th though.

My girlfriend had the Captain's Punch to drink she really liked it. It is not at all alcohol-free.

I hope there are no issues this trip with the altitude change. Nausea and headache are no fun.

slightly off topic but where/when is the ACA '13 event?

The zoo is nice in the morning and hitting the aquarium afterwards with lunch in between works out quite nice during the week. Not at all on the weekends though.

Just my 2 cents....

The resteraunt is a joke and a rip off! I am a cook by trade and can tell you i was very dissapointed when we went for a friends birthday, and so was most of the party for that mater, the captins punch was by far the best part of the meal, but at around 12 bucks not cheap. Our apps came out with the meal, as opposed to before. We had a vegiterian who is lactose intolerant in the party, they gave her a hard time to take shrimp off a dish an still put cheese on it! My wifes fish was ok but dry an you could tell it was a frozen product. Sauces tasted like they come from a can. For the price there are far beter restaraunts in walking distance from the aquarium.

As far as the aquarium is concerined there is nothing like it in colorado, an from that stand point its great! But truth be knowen my wife and I are underwhelmed. I wish they had more planted tanks, an in the tropical section that is suposed to have tanks from SA, i wish they had discus, which they dont! Really the biggest draw is the salt water fish, which accounts for 2/3 of their tank space.

Honestly the aquarium was beter before landrys took over. Just mho. The zoo is a beter value.
