Rare Fish

Does anyone know of good LFS's where they actually take special orders? I'm looking for some of the harder to find species such as Pencilfish and Zebra Plecos.

Will be hard to find zebra plecos, since their habitats are getting destroyed and part of it is due to collection. I talked to my friend about it and after hearing about this, I gave up on it.

Might want to hit up Tony Orso's site or give him a call and see what he has. His addy is www.tonyorsousa.com.

What type of pencilfish are you looking for, Raul?

We can just about find the full gamut in our LFSs.

Pencilfish are practically impossible to find in the Bay Area.

I'm not in the bay, I'm in the south. I actually plan on breeding the Zebra Plecos to stop habitat destruction and to make them more cheaper/available in the hobby. But it's not going to be easy to find a breeding group to start with. Thanks Ibn for the link.

I'm more interested in the Red Corals, and although I found an online source I'm trying to find a local source.

You can pick up Coral Red pencilfish fairly regularly on AquaBid.

Why drive yourself nuts looking locally when you can get them pretty online handily? Shipping is no big deal nowadays either.

Depends on the variety of pencilfish you're looking for. There's a few stores in the Bay Area which regular stock them. Two that comes to mind is Octopus Garden (saw some coral reds and another species last time that I was there). Ocean also carries a large variety of them.

sorry to bring back an old thread, but...

well i'm looking for a local source for coral red pencilfish as well. i got some from rare fish in walnut but they all died. happen to get two from octopus and they're doing fine but looks a little odd in a 40 cube.

i'm also in the socal (irvine), so if you need extra numbers to get a lfs to some nice coral reds let me know. or if you happen to find some that would be great too.

have you tried neptune's reef in torrance? that's the only shop i see with pencilfish on a semi-regular basis, but can't seem to get coral reds.

btw, have you heard about a possible new 'purple'? or are these just coral reds under a different local name?
