I got a replacement diffuser and it did the same thing; leaked at the gasket with no bubbles coming from the white shaft. I'll take it back too.

Instead I made a simple reactor with the bottom of a clear plastic cup. Took minutes; works great; and it's high up in the back corner of the tank and you can't even see it unless you go looking!
