Being kept alone isn't an issue and it might be more relaxing with one since they won't be chasing each other around.
Never tried one with a goldfish before, so can't say. Mine are with angelfish and I have yet to see one go after the slime coating on those. However, goldfish produce a thicker slime coating than most fish.
