Skinny stems... What to do?
Plants have been getting leggier and leggier in our tank.
At first it wasn't noticable, we had excellent growth, the hygro was good and dense, so was the rotalla, and now there's like a inch between the leaves in the Hygro. It's gotten really lanky too, smaller leaves. What's the cause here? they grow super fast, but seem to be getting skinnier all the time.
Here is the info on this tank:
75 gallons, densly planted
3x 65W of T5H0
DIY C02 changed once every 3 weeks or so (it's my boyfriends job, but he only does it when I get cranky about it)
4 capfulls of Big Als Aquarium fertilizer 2 capfuls of Flourish Excel
1 capful of Flourish Iron
All dosed 2 times a week (sometimes 3)
Root tabs under the crypts and swords.
We don't have this issue with the same plants (clippings from the plants in the 75) in our ten gallon or 5.5. which are both low light, low tech tanks. Is it a nutrient issue? Our Nitrates are really low (despite having a lot of fish in there). What should I do to promote thicker stems and bigger leaves?
