scarification of the american lotus

Can anyone provide or redirect me to information scarifying the corn to get them to sprout. Is temperature an issue? I gathered a lotus flower, so the seeds have over wintered already and are still outside at natural temps. I can scar them whenever, I just couldn't seem to find out how deep to file.

Do I just scratch it? Should I go through the shell? Should I move them inside or wait till spring?

I recall seeing a thread ...Just use search function above.

I think the bulb is dormant and needs to develop nutrients/energy as the temps increase and remain constant for a sprout.

Mine took 2-3 months, and then BOOOF.....It explosively grew.
