29 Gal Plants dying?

First post and new to forum! (and a lot to say/ask).
So I'm fairly new to aquariums (1 year experience) and have recently decided to start doing more planted/aquascape tanks. I have a few tanks, recently bought a 12 Long mr Aqua :-) and bought a few plants I really liked at LFS this past month before the tank shipped. I placed plants in 29 Gal that is primarily for Malawi Crab as a safe haven till new tank came.

It seems every plant I put in here dies... even water sprite. I have a 10 Gal which I could throw anything in and it would double in size in week and both tanks get same attention and additives. Any thoughts why this is?

Every Sunday all tanks get:
30% Water Change
Appropriate doses of the following:
Aquarium Salt
Prime
Stability
Flourish Excel
Flourish Iron
Flourish Potassium

29 Gal Specs: (Weekly water change's every Sunday)
Aqueon Kit Tank with 1 -T8 Full Spectrum bulb
2 Months running
pH: 8.0
Ammonia .25 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm

Fish: 4 - 1" Convict Cichlids (Temporary home till bigger)
5 - 1" otto cats
4 - 1" red clawed crabs
1 - 4" Malawi Crab :-)
All have been in there for entire 2 months of tanks set up

I also recently bought an ista 88g cO2 kit and has been hooked up for a week going about 1 bubble per second and still no plant growth on moss, low light plant or even water sprite.

Plant in last picture: Hygrophila Corymbosa 'Angustifolia'
(found this in an article "Due to its normally fast growth, it can be used as an indicator plant for several key plant nutrients. Small holes forming on the older leaves signal a potassium deficiency, premature yellowing and dying of older leaves signals a nitrate deficiency, and pale, almost white new growth usually signals an iron or trace deficiency.")

I think the problem is lack of Nitrates but again tank have been going for 2 months and all above listed nutrients have been out in weekly. Would lack of Nitrates do all this?

Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Salt is a no no with plants, that could be your issue

Oh... Very interesting I did not know that. So Aquarium Salt only for use when fish have disease and no plants then?

Also how dependent are plants on Nitrate's? Will those plants pictured above be good to put in a tank that I'm setting up tonight and should I turn cO2 on tonight in the new tank if I can add plants?

I think the lighting would be an issue. The CO2 in the tank already would be more than enough for the light you have. Also, the crabs might want to eat the plants as well.

Crabs so far have been good to plants surprisingly. Will move plants to 12 gal long tomorrow with cO2 and go from there. Definitely wont be adding salt to planted tanks now.

the plants won't use co2 at night so there is a risk of gassing your fish without propper airation, the salt is could be the big issue here.

Hang on, do you have fish/inverts in the tank? Ammonia is not good at all (it will kill fish, i have no clue on the crads and such, i can probably assume it isn't good for them as well). That should and needs to be 0,

Re: 29 Gal Plants dying?

What are the specs of the other tank? Low light plus salt are probably why the plants for in the 29. Plants in the 12 gallon with 1 t8 will do better because the distance and amount of water between the lights and plants will be less.

All my tanks have inverts and fish, 12 long will not. I set up the 12 long's lighting and got it almost ready. This 12 gallon long is primarily why I joined the forum as I'm new to growing high light plants with cO2. I will be starting a new thread on the 12 gallon for a few questions I have as this tank (29 Gal) will no longer have plants as of tonight.
