About to order some plants. Advise needed.

Hello all. I tried the manicured and segregated approach in my tank bit it's getting old. I decided i want to pack it full of plants now. I had a couple questions before i placed an order though.

I currently have DHG on one side and MS on the other with a white sand river bottom effect in between. I have dividers around both if them but they are slowly jumping them and growing into the sandy area. I was thinking about planting a HC mat over the sand and was wondering if it would out compete the MS and DHG or would they both grow trough the mat and take over? I don't mind a little intrusion i just don't want it to strangle out the HC. Is there another carpeting plant that would do better?

I don't know the species of the DHG i have, i only know it grows very tall very fast. It seems to stop growing when it gets about 8". I was thinking about planting a row corkscrew vals in between the rows of DHG but that would make it much harder to trim the grass around the plants. Would adding more light make the grass shorter and more dense or would it just grow faster?

I am sure i will have more questions before i place the order. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Allen

From my experience, hc plus dhg is a pita. They grow together, then you can't trim the hc low enough, and eventually it all floats up in a mat. Only use them in the same tank if you can keep them separate.

+1 ETK - all my hc is floating up - I'm using eco-complete so that could of been the problem. the DHG still grows wild with runners.

The DHG is getting very dense within the dividers. I am just getting a few runners here and there (pictures below). Does the HC float up due to the lack of trimming or some other reason? I was planning on dropping the mat in and weighting it down until the roots are able to hold it. If i can keep the DHG at bay would the roots eventually hold the HC down without the weight?

Haven't tried dropping in a mat, although I have heard of it. Anyone else? I am curious how effective that is.

Does anyone have any feedback on HC mat? Will it eventually root itself so the weights can be removed?

I am also looking to replace my Ludwigia Ripens. I like the color and growth but it's sending out roots from the stem like crazy and starting to look really scraggly. What would be a good red, pink, or purple plant to replace it with. I have searched around but the more i look the more confused i get. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
