Plants for goldfish

Does anyone have any suggestions for (floating) plants I could keep in a 5 gallon goldfish bowl?

I only keep one fish in it. I was thinking some plants might help with the water quality management (e.g., giant duckweed) and could also serve as a nibble for the goldfish from time to time.

Don't keep a goldfish in a five gallon tank, please. It's simply too small no matter how clean you keep the water.

I would use the 5 gal to grow duckweed and other floaters to feed the goldfish in a bigger (much bigger - 30 to 75 gallons and up) tank. In the goldfish tank itself, I would suggest Java ferns and very large Amazon swords or crypts. Floaters in the tank are great, but keep backup tubs in case they all get eaten up. Goldfish do not nibble. They eat, and eat, and eat. They're a force of destruction to be reckoned with.

I have goldfish. When a goldfish is young, it can go into 5 gallons. But in a short period of time, the goldfish is going to grow. My youngish goldfish is 6 months old and 5 inches long. Goldfish create A LOT of waste product. Plants won't moderate that. In a 5 gallon tank you will need to do a water change every couple of days. I hope you have a API water test kit. Is your tank cycled? Ammonia (uncycled) and nitrates (cycled) will climb fast. I'm current over stocked (4 goldfish in 50g with a BN pleco) and nitrates climb up in 4 days. Do keep up with testing your water and doing water changes, otherwise your fish will get sick or become stunted.

If you have goldfish questions, koko's forum is great....

That all said I know from experienced - duckweed and water lettuce - are a snack for goldfish. I found these plants to be gret with goldfish - anibus, swords and wisteria.
