I would consider a floating plant as a place for fry to hide. floating plants provide plenty of hiding spots, and I think those hiding spots near to the surface of the water make it easier for the fry to eat.
The floating plants I would use would be either Frogbit or Phyllanthus fluitans. I like those two plants because they have big leaves and long roots. the fish hide in the root systems, of course, and the big leaves make the plants easier to remove from the aquarium if they get too thick or if you no longer need them.
