Dense planting Rotalas

Does anyone have a problem with darkening lower leaves when planting very dense with stem plants. It seems that it is inevitable, and maybe I should put lower plants in front to hide the stems. Also, has anyone had the middle of Rotala Indica stay red but tops get bright green, and Rotala Wallichi get dark red instead of pink. Mine are doing this.

Why would the top of Rotala Indica become bright green while the middle stays red. Shouldn't the leaves closest to the light be red and not the ones in the middle. Is there a defficiancy that can cause this. I have a similar problem with L. Gladulosa, the uppersides of leaves are a glossy green, while the lowersides are a glossy red to purple.
