i have a 55gallon long tank, ei dosing, root tabs, sand/gravel mix for substrate,pressurized co2 and lighting that i can range from 110w to 220w T5 HO bulbs.
WHAT PLANTS SHOULD I GET??? lol..this is my first tank and idk what plants i can use with my substrate. even if you can give me 1 or 2 names thats fine...more would be better. i was looking for easy to grow stuff that i cant really mess up.
I'd say if you're doing EI, and adding co2, I'd go with the 220W (4wpg) and too bad your other option is 110W because something in the middle would be ideal. But, as far as easier plants are concerned; hygrophila, cryps, java ferns, swords, sagittaria, anubias, mosses all look good and are relatively easier to grow. All depends what colours and effects you're looking for in your tank.
no thats not true at all. but some plants do take nutrients through their roots so just make sure you put your root tabs down there.
as har as 4wpg of t5ho. thats what i have. its very difficult to keep things from going out of control. you need weekly trimmings at the minimum. if you mess up your ferts... algae. if you mess up your co2... algae. you need more co2 for that much light thanthe lime green drop checker suggests. you also need to dose more ferts than what is listed for ei.
3wpg t5ho is still really high. i wouldn't go that high on my first tank.
most of the plants that wre listed up above are slow growing plants that wouldn't do too well under that amount of lighting, ime.
2wpg is ok. start there. get used to things before you even think about taking things to the extreme
plantgeek.net has a pretty good site to look at plants based on the recommended light for them.
thanks again. i was wondering about that. everywhere i keep reading that i need at minimum 2wpg so i fiugure if i was dosing and co2 id need more. and opinions seem to be varied about how much wpg i need with t5ho. (my reflectors are quite crappy too).
i was just trying to find some easy fast growing plants, but thabks for the extra info..at this point , it all helps
wpg is kinda a crap way to figure things out, especially with the power of t5ho (even with not so good reflectors).
you kinda have things backwards, the more light you have the more ferts and co2. not the more ferts and co2 you have needs more light. and if you have proper co2 and ferts you can more than likely grow the majority of "high light" plants with the 2wpg of t5ho
It is never a good idea to make a lighting decision based on "watts per gallon". As you see above, two tanks of a different shape but same volume, will have considerably different light intensities with the same wattage of light above them. This doesn't even consider the effect of having the same size tanks, same wattage lights, but one having the light fixtures mounted inside a hood that holds them 6 inches above the tank, while the other has them sitting right on top of the tank. Again, two very different light intensities. The Dodo bird went extinct - "watts per gallon" should follow the Dodo bird's example.
WPG rule is aslo put to rest when you consider the fact that my 2 ancient 175w Metal Halides put out the same amount of light as a much lower wattage t5ho. Just backing Hoppy here. WPG is about as useful as 1" per gallon fish rule. Its not.
Distance from the bulbs to the substrate (as illustrated by Hoppy's diagram.) Then, if you have a tank that is deep front to back you need more bulbs spread out a greater distance to allow even lighting or a fixture that can be raised will also help spread the light front to back.
You also need to consider your goals for the tank, what you want to grow, how often you want to have to trim, and whether you are willing to use pressurized CO2 and dose ferts.
Agree that the OP does not need more than 2 T5HO bulbs for his 55 gallon tank.
