I've been running my planted tanks without heat for about two years now. I have yet to find a plant that seems to mind this, and yet a lot of the guides that I see online and in print suggest that you cannot keep these tropical aquatic plants without heating. Has anyone here ever had an experience with plants lost to overly cool water?
I guess it depends where you live at. For me, my house gets down into the low 60 during the winter and 80+ in the summer. I can have 10-15 degree swing with 24 hours.
I tried keeping Java Fern over-wintered in my 85 gallon stock tank. Not much growth and it actually killed part of it. And I can definitely say that Water Hyacinth doesn't do well with temperatures dipping under mid 50's.
My heater and chiller is outside. It's called an air conditioner. I keep my house within a few degrees year round. Not for the plants but for me.:laugh2:
I haven't ran a heater for years, from southern California to south Texas. Winter time my tanks are mid to high 60's and summertime high 70's no issues with flora or fauna.
My place dips into the mid 60s in the winter, but typically no lower. I'm in an apartment, so I don't have control over the heating, but they usually make sure we don't freeze up here.
It seems to me that all aquatic plants can thrive at room temperature.
