Do I need a cap on dirted tank

I have waded into using dirt in my tank. I used a 3 gallon jar and added Organic potting soil topped with pea gravel. I only planted with Downoi. That is why I started this tank to begin with, to propagate Downoi and add shrimp. This is my 8th try with this plant. Well the Downoi is growing like crazy but it is growing above the gravel. Some roots have anchored in the substrate but most are just growing along the top of the gravel. Can I just remove the gravel? Do I really need a topper on the potting soil? I don't really want to break it down and redo but I am afraid that trying to remove the gravel will make a mess.

No you don't need a cap but it will be very messy and be disturbed easily. That's basically the only reason people do it. If you won't be screwing with it at all then I wouldn't bother with a cap. I know there are examples of people on here who have done capless dirt setups.
