"eco-complete is a lot better nutrient wise" is a HELL of a lot better than "because I say so" or that because sand is no good.

I have Onyx sand in one tank. And I wil never use it again. I hate the color, and the stuff is a cast iron b***h to rinse. Also it is very light and gets disturbed when ever you do anything in the tank.

If you want a dark colored substrate then use Eco-Complete.

It's what I'm using as of recently... no complaints yet, other than the rinsing and initial clouding.

I've got onyx sand in my 150 and am happy with it. It's a pain to rinse, but so is flourite. I didn't want a completely dark substrate so I mixed in a couple bags of natural, light colored fine grained aquarium gravel. I have several big root feeders (lotuses and swords) and they seem to like the substrate.

I actually like the sand over the bigger grained stuff like flourite (which I had in a previous aquarium). I think it's easier to plant stuff. I think it mimics nature a little better as well since river and lake beds are sand/dirt.

One thing to keep in mind is that the sand compacts a lot when it's wet. So you'll probably wind up needing more than you think (I did).
