soon to be setting up my 20 gal tank. Its base is 30x12" (H = 18"). I am after a depth of roughly 2" all over of substrate.

I am thinking one of the following (based on sizes of packs available):

30lb fluorite + 4 1/2lb terralit

or

15lb flourite and 11lb terralit

i would rather buy too much substarte than not enough, as i have other tanks i could add it to, but i am also interested in peoples opinions about the amounts of each? would the second option give me a better mix? and would it be enough substrate all together or would it be a bit thin?

any advice appreciated

what is terralit?

IMO if you use flourite, you dont' need to add anything else. 2 bags of flourite will give you a good 2" depth in a 20gallon long. In a 20tall, you'd have almost 3" depth with 2 bags.

terralit is a zeolite based gravel...

terralit

its supposed to have good mineral content, and a very high Cation exchange capacity, to aid the binding a subsequent release of other nutrients

see here for details

i just thought it might be worth trying a mix of two compounds, so as to gain any benifits that one might have over another

BTW... what do you count as a 20 long and a 20 high?

A 20 long is 30"x12"x16" usually, a 20 high is 24"x12"x20" (going off the top of my head, but a long is 30" for sure, and not as deep as a 24" 20gallon)
