The sand bottom look isn't for me, but I was wondering if there was any problems using a base of sand - about 1 inch or so, as "filler" for a slope I'd like to make and place 2-3" of flourite on top

Is this possible? Will this affect plant growth?

Sand doesn't tend to hold a slop, it will probably flatten out quickly.

okay, well if I put a flat 1 inch of sand as bottom "filler" first then slope with flourite, will that work?

I don't like the layer'd look of sand and gravel/flourite.

What I can tell you, though, is that pea gravel and flourite do 'mix' well so you can't really tell it's a mix of substrates. So I'd do a layer of pea gravel, then your flourite. if it gets mixed around from replanting later, it won't look bad.

I like malkore's suggestion, but to answer your question: yes it should work fine. The fluorite will not sink into the sand and it should hold a light slope.
