How does this sound?

.5"-1" of kitty litter / top soil mix
topped with Shultz Aquatic plant soil

is this ok, or should I realy have regular gravel topping it off?

With the Schultz Plant soil and Kitty Litter both being very light, it will be really hard to anchor and keep plants in your substrate. I would definitely recommend to top it off with some gravel.

I wouldn't bother with the KL. Just Schultz (Profile) under a gravel cap. Stuff works great. The KL may cause you problems, won't do anything the Schultz already does.

But the Shultz doesn't have any nutrients, just a high CEC.

The nutrient thing has been discussed by better than me on the APD in times past. Profile (the material Schultz' is made from) has iron. If you want nutrient-rich substrate, you'll have to add nutrients, whether it be Profile, Eco-complete, Flourite, or whatever. The most useful substrate amendment I can think of would be something to add humic acid to make nutrients available in the substrate. That's why I have added peat or leonardite to Schultz' recently in my small tank. I've used Profile since I started a year ago and it works fine. After considering KL, I just don't need the aggravation. There's plenty of alternatives to play around with. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but I don't think I will. I just don't believe you will see any real difference in the way your plants will grow, but you will see a difference during maintenance.

I am a newbie here so I ask this as a question along with a suggestion, but what about putting sand over the profile?

Sand over profile will work - but only with a very light fish load, in my opinion. Fish waste will collect on the surface of the sand and become unsightly. With gravel, the fish waste can make its way down into the substrate to break down and provide nutrition for plants.

Use a mix of top soil and Shultz, topped with fine gravel(Bits of Walnut 1-3mm)...this is probably the best long term solution.

Ok, I think i'll try about .75" of a soil/shultz mix, with another inch of shultz, toped off with 1-2" of regular gravel. Sound ok?

Thanks for your help. Actually I just got flourite. I didn't think I could get any, but I did from Petsmart because they matched BigAls price. I was trying to do substrate thing cheap, but the flourite was a great deal. I ended up with 2 bags of flourite mixed with one 10 pound bag of shultz aquatic soil. I have a good 3 or 4 inches.

Thanks for the comments on my signature.
