The other day at my LFS I saw a tank where they'd sprinkled some flat glass marbles (like these... over their substrate, and while it obviously didn't look like a natural riverbed, it was very pretty. I wouldn't mind having just a few of these sprinkled in the bottom of my tank. Can anyone think of any reason they might be harmful to plants or fish?

The only benefit of having a bed of marbels is when you want to breed Barbs...

I don't think they would pose any harm. Glass is totally inert, and heavy too, so fishies won't play soccer with them. If it is just a few here and there, they won't get stuck between them either. And I suppose they are too big to be eaten (couldn't open the link). So... no harm as far as I can see.

No, they are not harmful to either plants or fish. They're used pretty often in betta bowls and such. As mentioned by Wasser, they're inert and it'll take a decent size fish to move these suckers around. If you like the way they look, go for it (just too unnatural to be appealing to me ).

BTW, you can also find them at certain stores such as Pottery Barn and even in candle shops.

I just bought to try to give the appearance of water in a pond in the substrate. Did it appear like that from a distance? Hoping to create appearance similar to this
