Dirt planted tank and soft water

So I'm in the process of setting up a 12 gallon long. The plan is to go low tech (no CO2, med light) with a Dutch layout. Lighting wise I have a 36" Satellite Freshwater LED+ on the way.

My question is about the building up the substrate. I've done dirt (MGOPS) with a lot of luck but I've never used terribly demanding plants. Trying to achieve a Dutch layout in a low tech tank is going to be challenging and I want to make sure I get thing right. The other thing is my tap water is very soft, like 0 gh/kh.

Here's my current plan:
  • Dolomite sprinkle
  • 1" MGOPS
  • Red clay
  • 1" Sand cap

So the dolomite should help boost gh/kh and the clay for Fe. Does that make sense? Am I missing anything?

Hello, I don't have much to add but I do have more reading material that you care for on the subject

These links are thorough, if not tedious, but should answer any and all questions about mts and additives:

Substrates for Aquarium Plants
an overview about substrate
aquasoil alternatives
A zany read

Finally, a helpful post about dolomite just in case it's useful

Read them or don't, there is a lot of good info there though

I used what you listed but decided to add greensand, iron oxide powder, pulverized jobes organic root tabs and a sprinkle of peat fwiw

Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand
