Depth of my substrate?

How thick a substrate to plant glossostigma, the normal 3" or less?
The plants I got are about 6" long, can I cut the stem shorter an will it grow back if I cut it should I cut the top or bottom?

I like 2 inches of dirt & clay capped by 1 inch of sand/silica. The dirt will compact over time and you will end up with 1 inches of each.

About how long do u think it takes to compact I have a 20H with 1.5 dirt and 1.5-2" of cap and its so soft I can almost push a wet noodle in there it's holdin the plants tho. I also started a tank with white play sand and its compacted I likee it that way (compacted).
