How High Can I Go?

I'm going to be setting up my Picotope soon with Black Diamond, and want to have one side sloped high to create the visual dynamic I'm trying to achieve. I don't think I'll actually plant anything in that part of the substrate, as I've heard too thick it can cause the roots to tangle. Do I need to worry about gas pockets, compacting waste, anything bad happening? I'm thinking at least 3-4 inches high on that side, sloping down to around 2" for the rest.
What say ye?

should be fine, I haven't heard that deeper substrate can cause roots to tangle. Personally I wouldn't avoid planting in that area.

I think most of the concerns I have heard about deep substrates are to do with getting anaerobic pockets, and building up of toxic gasses (mostly H2S, i think). If it's just inert substrate, without dirt/ferts, I don't think this would be a real issue.

and I imagine 4" is just fine - most people who do a dirted system seem to end up with about 3" or so anyways (1-2" dirt, 1-2" cap).
