Deep sand bed question

Would a substrate heater be counter productive in a deep sand bed?

Substrate heaters have been found to be of little, if any, benefit for planted tanks. The money spent on them would be more productively spent on a good CO2 system.

The concept of heating the substrate is for better water movement, thus better exchange of oxygen, fertilizers and so on throughout the DSB.
However, aquatic plants do a really good job of gas exchange without you having to provide power to heat the substrate. As Hoppy suggests: Keep the plants thriving, spend your money on CO2, good lighting, and they will do the job for you.

Thank you for your replies. I have a deep sand bed tank set up now with a substrate heater, but I do not believe it is effectively removing nitrates. I was thinking that maybe the circulation deep in the sand bed might be causing too much oxygen to get to the bottom of the tank where the anaerobic bacteria would need to grow thus defeating the purpose of the deep sand bed. Could that be the case?

Plants remove nitrates. Get the plants going and forget the anaerobic bacteria.
