Not to bad. I use organic top soil w/ peat moss, then a layer of calcined clay, then I cap it with my gravel. Makes it less messy when planting.

Hardest thing in my view, is placement of plant's.
Don't want to be uprooting them any more than necessary so placement, growth characteristic's are essential .

And I'm assuming this would probably be a lot cheaper than going out and actually buying Aquarium plant substrates? Which can cost like, what 40 dollars a bag at LFS?

Eco complete was going for 39.99 at a LFS by me.

Is there any particular brand I should go for if I was to go this route?

Petco was selling Eco complete for cheap...I don't know if they caught on to not charging an additional shipping fee but when I bought them I got free shipping with orders over $49

i tried dirting my tank one then i broke it down and did aquasoil. im not sure if it was the dirt or the moss i bought, but i ended up having worms and the sort in my tank. i also had a lot of tannis that never really went away. i also think it works better for larger tanks becasue you have to use both the dirt and the cap and you want the dirt to be deep enough to get a good root system.
