Cories, Plants and PFS

hey all,
I have a 75 gallon aquarium that I would like to switch over to sand. ACE has a product, HTH pool filter sand (Aqua Quartz® 50lbs Pool Filter Sand (61308)) that I have heard good things about. One thing that hasn't been mentioned thought is whether it is to sharp for cory cats sensitive barbels. Alternatively I am looking at CaribSea's sunset gold sand but it is much more expensive.

I assume I will need root tabs and/or liquid ferts, right? I would rather have a lower-tech tank and I am not able to do CO2 but i love planted tanks.

Does anyone have experience with this sand and cories? I am hoping to breed my sterbai's so they really need to love it. Do you have any other recommendations?

Thanks,
Aloe

The cories should do fine with pool filter sand.

Go with root tabs if you have heavy root feeders such as crypts and swords. Dose liquids if you're going to keep stems, epiphytes (anubias, java ferns), mosses, and/or floaters.

I have pool filter sand in my sterbai Cory tank. I believe it is lighthouse brand. Mine love to dig through it. Especially when they are looking for blackworms. I just put root tabs in once a month and have no issues whatsoever with the tank. They have not bred for me yet, but they are just coming into breeding age now so I anxiously await.

Is the light house brand still for sale? I poked around online (briefly) but I didn't see it.

I got it at my local pool store. I'm not sure if they carry it every year or not. I just bought it to try out and am happy as can be with it

Quartz-based sand is great for Cories. They'll definitely love it.

I have a high tech planted 180 with PFS. I have a layer of soaked peat moss (pre soaked in my water change drums) and baked Earthworm castings below about 2 1/2" - 3" of PFS. I also supplement with Osmocote caps.

I have the cream colored PFS from Leslie's.

I have a school of Cory Sterbai that are fat and happy with no damage to barbels. Mine also like to sift through the sand after I feed the tetra schools.
