How much Clay is to much

i found a place locally that sells earthen ware powdered clay that requires high fire which i think works for mts... they sell it in 50 lb bags... im wondering and as im reading more about mts ... im wondering... is there a limit to how much clay i can use??? what if i wanted to grow plants that are blood red in mircle grow organic choice and wanted to enrich it with iron??

5-10% clay is fine.
Roughly 1/4 lb per square foot of tank bottom.

yea but what happens when you go over 10 percent.. like... 15 or even 25?

I grew plants just fine in 60% red art clay. If you're going with Aaron's method though, follow his directions. It won't kill you to have a little extra clay in the mix, but it's best to not go too overboard with it.

I've never regretted over engineering a system, but often regretted under engineering one.

My MTS has a red tint to it, I'm sure it's over the 5% recommendation. Get close don't stress over it. Clay is "part" of the recipe not the major ingredient.

From my experience, nothing bad will happen to the plants, but it sure can make a mess in your water column. If you pull plants and move them around, do it slowly and carefully. Clay is super fine silt, and when suspended in water can make a red mushroom cloud of annoyance in your nice clean tank if you have a lot in the substrate and yank roots out quickly.

Plants love the iron from the red clay though.
