Can i use soil from my garden?

I was wondering if i could go dig some soil from my garden to use in my tank, iv'e never had a planted tank before and just signed up here to learn. I was wondering, if i can use soil from my garden how would i treat it ect..?

welcome to TPT

to answer your question, yep

i would rinse/soak then dry it once, if youve ever used fertilizers in that area before

otherwise...put a 1.5" layer in your tank and cap it with another 1"-1.5" layer of gravel or sand

plant it heavily from the beginning, slowly fill with water, cycle your tank and start a dosing regimen...then add fish

Thanks for the answer, im waiting to sell my 2 bala sharks and 3 silver dollars [next Tuesday] so i'll set it up then
