Hi guys, I have a 45 gal planted tank with a horrible blue gravel but all is growing. My Q is would I be able to add a layer of black aquarium sand on top of the blue gravel? I use root tabs so fert is not an issue. I don't want to rescape or uproot anything. I also for the life of me could not catch any tropical fish without ruining my scape so I just have to work around them. Now I plan to use a turkey baster to slowly lay the sand in. What do you guys think? will this work??
I did the exact same thing, had a gravel bed that was well established with all that gross fishy goodness. I just topped it with sand, haven't had a problem 1.5 years later.
Okay, new idea...kitty litter scoop. Obviously use a new/clean one, but once the sand is in, you should be able to scoop the gravel out as long as you work slowly. Then you don't have to wait for the sand to settle.
To be honest, I would rather spend the time catching fish rather than trying to sift through all the substrate with a kitty litter scooper...
