Low tech nano tanks

On the heater directions it says not to keep near AC, heat, or light sources. But if most aquariums have lights, how do you not have a light on the tank that has the heater? Here is the light and heater I have Click image for larger version

ID:	90138. That is my bowl where i throw spare plants and whatnot. And this is my finances tank, I set it up, and every fish we've had (2 so far) died. It was cleaned before both fish, uses the same water as my other tanks, and water parameters are fine. Going to tear it down and make another planted tank.
