The accidental "riparium"

At the school where I work, we have an old aquarium by the window- I would dump leftover pond water from the microscopy lab in it. Some alligator weed from the pond found its way in also.

Recently, I added some sort of grass.

I've changed the water once in about six years. It has snails and diving beetles that are never fed. I'm thinking about adding some more plants. Any suggestions?

hmmmm, looks pretty badass as it is. It would be quite hard to get any plants to grow with all that weed on the water blocking the light.
good luck...

Submit it as a biotope in the next AGA contest...

It is funny: I spend a fair amount of time poking around in marshes, bogs, lakes and so on. This looks SO much more like what one sees in nature than most tanks I see (including my own). I think it is refreshing and the pp has a point -- enter it as a biotope!

Do you all think rushes would survive in the light from a window? I can collect some on campus.

Added some rushes today:

We will see if they survive on light from the window.

Yes, I've topped it off for six years. Just changed the water for the first time a few weeks ago. I've not added animals intentionally, but some come in in the pond water we add.

I love this.

Don't add too much stuff intentionally! I love the idea of an accidental tank. Kind of ruins the point if you're adding things on purpose.

I put some sort of pennywort in a few weeks ago- it was growing in the water with the leaves popping out the top. It seems to be growing ok.

I'm not sure how the rushes are doing- I'm seeing lighter colors near the base, don't know if that means they are dying or growing yet.
