Ready to go but need advice- can i do it?

So long story short i had my acrylic guy make me a tank and he used the wring thickness so i posted and many suggested i do a riparium. That sound sliek a great idea as i do love plants specifically cacti and succulents.
So it is about 30 long by 11 wide and high. My idea part cause i like it and part cause finances are tight.
I wanted to create a an island look by taking a plant base and put sand on top... My idea is to find some plantes that look like mini trees and then some smaller ones around it only on the center of the island. Fill the tank with a few inches of water and either some small fish or one fish or maybe a few shrimp...
I spoke to hydrophyte and he made some recomendations but i realized that there is a ton i dont understand yet for example he recomended sticking some plants on the rear of the tank in planters... Instead of keep bugging him perhaps you all can advise me a bit. I really like the look of this
