how many times do you filter?

im setting up a tank for red ear slider, and i plan to get a canister filter, the tank will have about 40 gals of water, is there a rule of thumb like the water needs to be filter 4 times an hr (160gph) or 5 (200 gph) what do you all do?

I'd shoot for 10x turnover per hour. Can be more or less depending on how much media/stock is in question.
