I am creating a blue-tailed day gecko viviarium, and was wondering what other types of lizards/frogs/ or turtles would go in this 35g hex tank. The Blue-tailed day gecko require 80% humidity and temps between 75f-85f so am looking for plants and critters that also like high humidityand heat.
I have tons of emerse plants that would be perfect for your vivairium. I would not put turtles in as they eat tender plants. I would only put in the gecko(s) and plants. Give them their own home... they deserve it!
A 35 hex is not as big as you might think.Put the tank on the yard if you need to,and picture in your head HOW MANY animals have you seen living in that small of a area 24/7 in the wild? Without conflict that is.
If you would like to get into them, I have some D. Ventrimaculatus' for sale. They are a blue-legged, yellow and black striped/blotched back, blue bellied, thumbnail (meaning very small) species. Very pretty.
their body enhances (greatly) the poison to be more toxic than it was when it entered their system. most other animals do not have that ability. So "in a sense" they are developing the poison, just not introducing it.
some do it better than others too, which is why different species can eat the same ants, yet be more toxic to touch.
very few will be able to harm people anyway, even in the wild. it is ones like the Terribilis and Bicolor that can potentionally kill you. Most of the Dendrobates (most common genus in the hobby) will merely give you a tingly feeling. Your main risk comes from ingestion. So, just dont lick them or eat them and no harm will be done
so where might a person buy some of these poison dart frogs. I live in a small town and don't have many choices at the local pet shops.
you are pretty much stuck with having them shipped most of the time. dart frogs stress easy, especially when people walk by them all day, so pet shops will almost always have poor quality darts. if you can buy from a breeder and afford the expensive shipping (usually $50-$60), then that is the way to go.
Search around on the Sponsors at www.dendroboard.com. Vivarium Concepts is local to me and has many good frogs. Saurian Enterprise is also a good one.
