Two things I've learned with my new pond

I started a whiskey barrel container pond out back this year, it's been great. There are a number of bird feeders out there, so it's a place where squirrels and birds drink and sometimes bathe as well as a place to grow plants. I've noticed two things that I didn't expect:

1) Birds grab plants and carry them around. I saw a grackle grab some hornwort and fly off with it to do... something. If you have plants that are invasive for your area please note that they can escape in unexpected ways.

2) Birds dip their food in my pond. Again it was the grackles. They were grabbing a neighbor's dog food, bringing it over and dipping it to soften it to eat. Good to know that things can migrate in unexpectedly just like they can migrate out.

We have a mulberry tree in our yard and the grackles do that with the un-ripened mulberries as well. They're kind of pretty but so darn messy.
