Went cheap the first time, then replaced it.
The Xavan option is not worth it. While it is a bit thinner, it is not significantly better at getting into corners. I am not saying it is no good, it is holding up just fine. (10+ years) Just saying it is not worth extra money over the 45 mil EPDM.
We use 45 mil EPDM now. With padding. Easily available from 2 local suppliers in many widths so whatever size pond we create we can get the width we need.
The padding we use is a heavy duty filter fabric that is used behind retaining walls to keep dirt out of the gravel backfill. This is a thick felt-like material. I have carpet under my own pond.
