Told some folks I would post pics of my coho salmon tank. Nothin special as I usually raise so many fish in the tank that hardscape just gets in the way. I keep the tank at 44 degrees so plants are a non option, not to mention the eggs and young aelvin are very sensitive to UV lights. I cannot even put a small basic light fixture on the tank until they become fry. I had a catastrophic die off this year and lost 100% of my eggs due to some outgasing of some kind. So I am picking up some aelvin from a friend this coming week. I'll keep ya posted!
how big is this tank? also, do you raise these fish for eating? pretty cool idea regardless, but I think raising fish for food is a cool concept. do you have any pics of the fish in the tank?

I am a teacher and work in the summer as a professional fishing guide. The department of Fish and Game has hatchery programs to support natural fisheries in order to augment the fishing pressure witnessed durning tourist season. I raise the salmon into fry and then into smolt before releasing them into local lakes and streams. They boost the native biomass and help support everything from mink to eagles to fishermen. In turn, they give me an exceptional teaching tool for kids to learn about local ecosystems, life cycles, habitat preservation, and conservation.
I will post some pics of the aelvin (newly hatched salmon with attached yolk sacs) when I get them in the tank next week. They are very sensitive to any contaminants and I lost an entire batch this fall. although it was a great learning lesson for teacher and student alike, it was quite a set back nonetheless.
There is no shortage of wild caught salmon for me and my family to eat, so no need to raise these guys for food purposes:icon_lol:
thanks man. I never got the new aelvin last year so the thread died. I have my new fertilized eggs in the tank now with only one or two deaths. Keeping my fingers crossed. will get pics of the eggs tomorrow
A cutty in a tank must have been so awesome, trout are my favorite things with fins!
I did bluegill in a 29 in the past but as they grow they quickly require more space... More than typical aquarium fish. They remind me of cichlids. Good luck!
eggs are growing and developing now at 1.5 months after fertilization.
"eye spots" developing in 100% of live eggs. Some eggs have both eye spots already in full development.
Still only 1 mortality........out of 250 eggs!!!!
I just did a quick WC............4.5 gallons out of 20 gal tank. I had a student prep the bucket and set it outside for the temp to drop down to 43...........not a problem up here right now. I forgot to ask him if he primed the water to rid it of chlorine. I quick ran back and poured it in and am now home and wondering if I just killed all my eggs!
Do you think 30% WC with unprimed water just did me in (assumming he forgot to treat the water). The water sat for a few hours outside although I doubt that would enough time for outgassing of the CO2..........AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Hey this is such a cool idea. I love the idea of using it as a teaching tool, AND supporting the ecosystem there! Good for you. I love Alaska, I went up with some family for good fun and halibut fishing a long time ago. I need to go back!
AK is such an amazing place thats for sure. slow year for me with the halibut:icon_sad: im so sick of salmon this year already as we only put away 40 pounds of halibut. we love visitors here at Alaska West Air if you wanna have an adventure!
I had a 98% hatch with the cohos just 3 weeks ago. I did snap a few pics of the aelvin stage and they are now already considered fry. they havent eaten yet so they must still be living off their yolk's energy supply. Ill post some new pics soon!
What a great tank Learner! Back in 1989, when I was a wee 8th grader one of the science teachers did a class on Salmonids and we raised a batch of eggs from University of Washington for release into a local stream. That's still one of my favorite classes ever. Glad to see someone else is doing something similar.
thanks you guys! I sure appreciate the support. I finally finished up my desert viv and can now rest a bit...........been going tank crazy. Too many water changes and battles with algae. This tank has been a nice change of pace. No plants to worry about and only minor WC's. Luckily I can easily chill the water off by leaving it outside for a bit during this time of year.
The fry are eating but not ravenously at all like I expected. I had two members with a genetic defect causing them to stay in a whorled shape while developing into the aelvin phase of metamorphosis. I have been told it is not chronic whorling disease which is good. I had 11 eggs not hatch and the rest seem to be doing fine. I managed to cover up about 25 aelvin while doing a gravel vac last week and used about 50 or so fry for a teratogen experiment with my kids. That now leaves a good number of fish that this particular tank can support without being way over crowded. I have a few kids doing an independednt research project on fertilizer runoff and they will need 20 or so smolt to test. That should leave 100 smolt for my favorite little stream! Hope I can catch one in the years to come. Been thinking of clipping the tip of their caudal fin as a marking so I'll know if they make it to adult............ reseach suggests that at least 1 of them should
Operation "personal fishery" was a complete failure. 100% mortality in the outdoor rearing habitat. I tried to prep the smolt for release and we had a cold snap that killed em dead. lesson learned. the remaining test subjects are surviving and will hopefully grow fast. I want them as large as possible before the spring release. pics if anyones interested
