Doesn't look like Diatoms to me. in the one picture they look hair-like. Maybe someone else can chime in...

Looks like you have two types of algae. Do you have any Otto's or Amano shrimp these guy clean most of the algae and the shrimp really clean my wood off it looks almost sand blasted. I also add some Phos-Zord and that took carry of the rest of the Diatom.

I don't know where I'm going but I'm on my way.

It's definitely not diatoms. Looks a bit like black brush algae covered with sediment to me.

It looks like diatom and some hair algae. If you look at the first thread in algae has some link with pics and what and how to treat algae. It is very helpful and informive.

I don't know where I'm going but I'm on my way.

For cleanup crew, I have a Farlowella, 2 Zebra Nerites, and 3 Rabbit snails in a 37 gallon. I'll look into getting some ottos and/or some more nerites.

My black gravel (approx 7 years old) is breaking down and flaking it's paint. After reading about silicates and diatoms, and not finding any clear photos to confirm, I assumed it was diatoms.

Thank you for your input!
