First, great deal on the 58. I have one too, so I am kind of partial to that tank. What are your water parameters (co2, kh, nitrate, phos. etc...) If you post those someone here can probably help you out.
I liked it with the wood and the abundance of plants. It looks like you lost or removed quite a few. The algae on the wood would have eventually gone away.
Anyway post those water para. so you can stablize your tank.
