So I want to try some seriously pico tanks....I have a 5" i think cube, it's got some rocks and some dwarf hair grass that I picked up in my friend's lake in it, but I'm wondering what I should do about filtration or at least water movement? Last night I set up an air stone in one corner behind a taller rock, but should I do something else? I have another pico tank that I picked up from stargate_geek here http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/swap-n-shop/68806-nano-pico-tank-kits-sale.html I'm wondering should I be trying to do anything else filtration-wise? Or just daily PWC?
Any ideas on this? And also, how do i get rid of the dead hair grass pieces? There's new ones growing in and getting tall, but the brown ones are still there, any good ways to get rid of them? Or am i going to have to cut them individually? I put 2 snails in there, not sure if they'll do anything for the diatomacious algae or the dead pieces of grass, but i figured it was worth a shot ANY tips on pico tanks would be greatly appreciated! I'll start a journal about it one of these days
am interested in seeing how this works out.. i noticed you have a tube going into the little tank to pump in new air i assume?. do you have it in constantly? would it be possible to do something like this without it?
skyypeaches - I'm interested to see how it works out too! hahaha :hihi: The tube is connected to an airstone that I have hidden behind the tall rock for water flow, and the surface turbulence adds O2 and CO2 to the water. I had the tank just stagnant but it wasn't looking to good. That's one of my questions though too, is it necessary? and is there a way to filter a tank this tiny?
Plantoon - nope, it's actually not CO2, just air from an air pump at the moment. And thanks! I'm excited to see how it turns out myself
Karackle, I had a 3/4 gallon tank with gravel, 3 RCS, cabomba, and no other equipment. I kept it on a sunny shelf, but after a couple weeks, the cabomba started dying, debris/algae/mulm started accumulating on the gravel, and planaria and springtails were colonizing the tank. I did water changes about 1-2 times a week.
I'm not sure what happened, maybe the plants needed some ferts or the water needed more changing, but I hope that yours works out since it looks pretty nice. With that said, you should some kind of fauna in there to provide some plant nutrients.
nugboltz - thanks for the compliment, input and suggestion! Yes, I added 2 snails to the tank, i don't have any shrimp to add and I'm a little afraid they'd jump out?
Connordude - I was thinking a tiny canister would be good too, but have no idea how to make one either! I think 2 shrimp would look cool in there too, but I'm not sure if they'd jump out? it's so small and has no cover? Thanks for the compliment too, I really appreciate it!
plantoon - yeah, his tanks are amazing, even smaller than mine, but I think he does multiple partial water changes per day or something like that. I don't have that kind of patience :hihi: And thanks, i want to see the progress too!
blazeyreef - no I didn't buy it at Target, I almost got one at Target but this one was a vase that my boyfriend brought me flowers in because he knew I wanted to try a tiny cube pico tank , there's a slightly larger one at Target I may go back for if this one does well :hihi:

Blazeyreef - $3?! is that with employee discount or is there a sale?! don't tell me it's sale or I may end up woth more pico tanks than i know what to do with! :hihi: Seriously though, it is a cool type of experiment really doing such a tiny tank. I'd love to do a similar one that's slightly larger, but I suppose I should get my 30g finished and see how i do with this one first   Do make a journal if you go for it though! Speaking of which.....i should really start an actual journal about this lil tank!

well it was $3.50 with discount, I was a little off...but the thing is TINY... it might hold a cup LOL. I will have a thread up latter for it
Well I'm not sure about blazeyreef, but my similar-sized tank (we think) is about a 4.5" cube. When I do a water change tonight I'll drain 50% into a measuring cup and see how much it is to get a better idea of how much water it really holds, not more than a couple cups I don't think.
In other news, the hairgrass is starting to take off and is growing tall! And it must be relatively ok water conditions in there because so far both snails are still alive and doing their thing! The water is finally looking nice and clear and the diatoms seem to be lessening. I think adding the airstone for some water movement was the key. I promise, I will start a journal soon!
Also, still wondering if anyone has thoughts for me on 2 things:
1) Any ideas on filtration? a) if it's necessary and b) how i'd do it?
2) would a small shrimp or two do ok in here? will they jump out? or is it tooooo small?

but how about this, if you place some small tube with sponge, then place your air tube under the tube you make, it will be filter, and water movement too
yo can DIY-ing it, like that, but in really small and nice shape
plantoon....as small as it is, i don't think there's room for much more than something about the width of an airstone in the tank, but thanks for the suggestion!
JRB77 - I think you forgot to add a link? I will look at the DIY forum as well, but I'm interested in the link you were talking about if you could pass it on! Thanks!
In my limited experience, I don't think you need filtration. You have just 2 snails in there with a good amount of plants, which should balance each other out. If you are paranoid about excess organics, you could put a tiny bag of carbon or purigen into the tank.
With my 1 g tank, I never had any of the four RCS in there jump out; there is no cover and the water is about 1 cm from the top of the tank. I currently have three amano shrimps in that tank, which are significantly larger and more powerful than my RCSs and so far only one has managed to get into the HOB filter
