I have a 1 gallon hex that i bought at wally-world. It is empty and it fits perfectly on my window sill. I want to make it a planted tank and was just thinkin of useing the suns light only. I want it to have a good subtate, with like black silica sand on top. I would like it to be a java fern forest. Just java fern and some snails. I was thinkin of using kitty litter and some potting soil with the sand on top. Any ideas? i could get a lamp to put by it and get a light for night. It would get sun all day. Any ideas? Where can i get the black sand and stuff. Thanx

just a few comments

1) The sun will heat that tank up to leathal levels.
2) Java fern, when it grows in, will "stuff" the tank.
3) Direct sunlight seems to Algae's magic ticket to invade the tank on plague levels
4) Many brands of potting soil have lots of phosphates
5) Java fern isn't much of a root feeder, so a good substrate is somewhat a waste.

Sorry for my bad news.

Anyone have experience that says otherwise?

Why? I will have alot of snails. I mean my 55 has a 6500K daylight bulb and gets direct sunlight but all that grows is hair algae caz all my snails eat the algae. I just want something that would feed off hte subtrate and let the sunlight be the main source of light. What about micro sword?

do a little experiment for us. get a clear gallon container. Fill it with water in the morning of a sunny day. Monitor the temp. See how high it gets.

well, i won't beable to do it tomarrow. I don't think. Anyways if not doing my plan is there anything that wold look cool be easy to maintain, and be fun to do with my hex? I want it to be used some how. I have some of htis stuff that grows like a weed in a potted container (non-aquatic) and there is alot of it outside. It is growing really fast on my window seel, and was thinking of putting some of that stuff in there. OR maybe just some flowers? What you think? What should i do with it, what would you use it for if it was yours? I also have a 2 gallon betta bowl that my platy fry are in too, i could use that too when they leave it.
