5.5 for Iwagumi

I'm thinking of trying a small scale iwagumi. I have a couple obstacles. One of which is finding a light source.
my current thought is trying a CFL or 2 from hanging type dome fixtures. But i'm open to any other suggestions so long as they are not hard on the budget.

probably going to go with HC and dwarf hair grass.

I might add that i do have a spare CO2 set up i can and probably will use.

thanks gang

a 5.5 certainly is very doable. a desklamp or workshop clamp light running at 6500k cfl would most definitely work as cost effective alternatives.

If you are going with HC, consider doing the dry start method to give the plants enough time to establish a root system before filling the tank up with water. You'll have an easier time not having to walk the tight rope to balance light and algae.

Both dwarf hairgrass and hemianthus callitrichoides transition very well between emersed and submerged.

Check out my Mini-M journal - I did a dry start of glosso and HC for ~6 weeks (I am patient). I also did the dry start for that long because it was going to be low-tech/excel. If you are going CO2, then even more reason to do a dry start. You can do the dry start as long as you have patience for it.

if i can get the right lighting i can wait 6 weeks. i have had HC do fine for me in the past. it spread great and did good adding it to an established tank. however, i allowed a bunch of hair algae infected rotala slip by me ( rookie mistake) and i ended up with it getting tangled in my HC. I'd very much like to avoid that.
Since then i have obtained an RO unit and have learned quite a few things. I now understand so much more than i did but still learning.

I have eco-complete, pressurized CO2 and a small hang on in mind. I wish somebody made a small affordable canister for small tanks. I have a few rocks picked out and plan to go with just HC. maybe some dwarf hair grass depending on lay out.
I have some red cherry shrimp and scarlet badis to go in it when done.
I want to keep a photo record of it too but we'll see how much time i have.

thanks for the advice
