How long does a typical nitrite cycle last?

So I thought perhaps my tank had somehow cycled without me even noticing. For 3 weeks I noticed 0 change in nitrite and nitrate. I switched from semi-daily 20% water changes to weekly.

All of a sudden now almost finishing week 4, I have had a nitrite spike. No more than 1ppm as far as I can tell (yes, I still have the crappy test strips).

I have gone back to doing semi-daily water changes. My Betta seems to be a bit stressed for sure. I can't tell if he is ticked or just begging for food half the time. I do not want to feed him more as I know this would hinder the nitrite cycle, or at least make it worse for him.

I recently started using API Leaf Zone. Only 1ml per week. Could this be causing any problems?

It seems to last an eternity!

I did a fishless cycle for the first time last year and found those nitrite eating bacterial are the slowest breeding ones. Give it a couple more weeks.

I've heard that a upping the temperature to the mid 80's and adding some gentle aeration helps. Not sure this is good for your betta.

Well, I am about to start up my 29 gal at home. Maybe I should put him in that for now. Even with a 25% water change, the nitrite level is staying at 1ppm.

Actually, I think that is what I am going to do. Get my 29gal started and put him in there for a week or so, while the office tank finishes cycling. I can't seem to keep it at less than 1ppm nitrites.
