filter or not

I have a 2.5 gallon tank with a small cascade filter on it but the water on top is always mucky looking. Is it a waste of times and electricty to use a filter on such a small tank?

I use Azoo Palms on all my 2.5 gallon tanks and I love it. Wouldn't run a 2.5 gallon tank without a filter personally. At the very least it's a large reserve of biofilter bacteria and circulates the water for your plants.

water circulations is important.
HOBs often arent too good at mechanical filtration, but they can serve as decent biofilters (if you have biomedia in them). they will give you the circulation you need as well, and surface agitation.

I dont use them in tanks that small because my bettas always ended up getting sucked in. Mine is pretty powerful though, you could clearly see it effect in a ten gallon. I would use one if I could, but for smaller tanks entire water changes are easier. If it is really heavy planted I think you would be okay, but a filter would def help.
I have it on med in a 3.5 and it moved my moss ball, anachris, covered my javafern in sand and moved my sand around so I have a lovely hole in the tank. Saved me from redecorating >.<

If there are no fish, I would be to worried.
