My 5.5 Gallon: Is it Ok For RCS?

It's about 6 months old, with crypts (the parva is doing GREAT, but for some reason wendetti has never grown well for me) and hygrophila siamensis.

As you can see I have a bit of an algae problem. I reduced the lighting to 13 watts (before it was 23), so hopefully that will help. Plus I went through a 4 month (I know that's really bad!) lull in water changes because my big bottle of prime was a PAIN in the butt to use. I got a smaller one recently for little doses that works 10x better, so I'm going to do 50% changes once a week.

The aquaclear broke down after 5 months (I think after the power went down one night in a storm it ran dry?) so I was thinking about getting a small sponge filter in preperation for shrimp.

Just make sure your tank and filter are completely cycled, which shouldn't take that long in an established tank like that, to be sure it's ready for shrimp and it should be fine. Maybe consider tossing some moss in behind or attached to the wood.

What kind of moss do you suggest? Java?

Any kind of moss that appeals to you, honestly.

I like all kinds. Christmas, Java, Peacock, Willow, et al. They all look great in my opinion. And they're all great with shrimp.

Oh yeah, toss some RCS in there! These guys are pretty good at surviving in any tank I've thrown them in.
