Walstad Style Moss Jar?
I wanted to start a Walstad-ish jar specifically for moss in a 1-2 gal seal-able jar. This is for my brother who loves various mosses, will collect them locally and put them into moss gardens on plates (Rather cool stuff). He doesn't know about aquarium mosses (to my knowledge) and I figured this would make a cool Christmas present.
Alright so now the questions:
First is temperature: would room temps of low 60's during the winter be okay for most mosses? My stocking ideas are java moss and flame moss. I might through in something other than moss (possibly a crypt or Staurogyne Repens) just to help the scape.. We will see. I would love suggestions on both what the hardscape should be (Rock or wood?) and any other types of mosses that might be suited. I do have a spare 7 watt heater that could go into the jar, so if the cold temps are an issue i can raise it.
I have never personally worked with mosses before, what is the best way to kick start this thing? I have read about starting emersed but I also know that when going to immersed they tend to die back. How bad is that?
Any suggestions on the sub strait?
If i need to put a heater in for the moss I think i will probably put in some Neocaridina shrimps to make things better managed algae wise.
When i get this put together I will be sure to post pictures!
