My First Planted Tank

So I just bought a JBJ 12 DX earlier today from petsmart and want to set it up with live plants. I dont have much experience with live plants--pretty much everything I know, I have learnt from reading what others have said over here.

I'm interested in planting HC and Glosso. I am starting with a mixture of Fluorite/Fluorite Sand and Onyx Sand for the substrate. Planning on getting my CO2 kit from foster and smith.

The tank came with reef safe lights 2 50/50 CFL and 2 LED moon lights. Any one know if I should change the lamp to just day light or leave it with 50/50? Not sure if it will make a difference.

Anyway here are some pictures of the tank.

Thank you all!

Nice to see a local on here. 50/50 is a saltwater bulb, i think. I would also look at greenleafaquariums.com for a CO2 system. Their regulators are great and customer service is really good. If you need plants just look on SnS. Your off to a decent start!

Yes you should switch out the 50/50 bulbs for something in the 6500-10000K range.

And just so you know, if you mix regular Flourite with a sandy substrate, the sand will sift below the Flourite.

VadimShevchuk, Thanks for getting back! I looked at Greenleafaquariums--their stuff looks pretty impressive but a little out of my price range. Fosterandsmith had a combo package on sale so I was going to go with that. You mentioned SnS, I'm not quite sure what it is...

I was going to post the lnk to the CO2 setup I was looking at, but I dont have the priviliges to post web links yet...bummer

Thank you once again.

So I finally got my new bulbs in, I'm using 1 24watt 10,000K and 1 24watt 6500K. I now also have 2 24watt 50/50 light bulbs that I'm looking to sell if anyone is interested. I stopped by my local pet store, and they were selling "HC" However, based on the pictures I have seen of HC it does not look anything like it--I might be wrong (I'll post some pictures if anyone could help me identify it). Also planted some dwarf hairgrass, Its been a week, so far everything looks alive. I keep spraying it with a mixture of (Flourish, Flourish Nitrogen, Flourish Trace all 5mL in 1 gallon H20 and Flourish excel 2.5mL).

Also have some java moss in there, that I will attach to some driftwood that I have curing. But just letting it grow for now.

So Carbon Dioxide equipment...I'm going with a paintball tank that I purchased from Dick's sporting goods and taking VadimShevchuk's advice and purchasing the CO2 manifold from GLA.

Here is what I am thinking of getting: http://greenleafaquariums.com/co2-re...regulator.html

Any suggestions, or comments, please do let me know...I am new to this and don't know much...

Personally I would go for a regulator that fits regular sized tanks rather than paintball tanks.

Also, if you're trying to get a HC carpet, you might want to spread the plantings out a bit. 2 or 3 plantlets per clump is ideal. This is an extremely tedious task but it will produce a thicker and more lush carpet in a shorter amount of time.

JBJ 12 gallon redone

So I fell behind with full time school and full time work in taking out time to maintaining my tank. Needless to say all I had left was algae in the jbj. So I finally cleaned everything out and started all over again. I bought a milwaukee pH controller and hooked it on to the solenoid. Had some left over HC that I was growing in a pot separately that I planted in here along with some other stuff...Been almost a month now, things are looking much better. Figured I'd post some pictures of it!
