starting up my 5 gal, and just looking for some opinions. on the cycling for my seed bacteria, should i use a filter cartridge from my 55gal? a piece of wood from my 10gal? or gravel in a stocking from my 10 gal?
also for 5 gals, what r the main plants you all are going with? and what thickness should my sand be? i so far have 1 5lb bag in there, this enough?
ill be going out today to find hardscape, and once its ready for fish, im thinking of adding a dwarf puffer, and shrimp? or will the puffer make a meal ou of them?
any other opinions on some uncommon fish for a nano? just bouncing some ideas around.
anything i should know about the puffer? never dealt with them, did some research and it sounds like theyre a pretty solitary fish. will they go after otos at all? any advice would be awesome.
Yea the best thing for cycling is to use some filter media from an established filter.
As for substrate you should have about 2 inches of substrate. Plants should be what you like as long as it is not too big for a small 5 gal.
I am redoing my mini M right now with some HC HM Rotala colorata and a bit of Didiplis Diandra. I also have som C. Parva in there too. Will be adding some a few more plants later.
and cool, both cartridges in my big tank are only a week old though, had to replace the two that were in the cause they were toast(ya i know one at a time but ive done it like this before with this tank and the levels dont go up roud now will one week be enough on one of those filters for this tank?
ok so i set up the tank, pulled a filter cartridge fom my 55 gal, and stuck a half inch piece of shrimp in there. the most i have seen this thing come up to was .25-.50, and now it is back to zeroed out. tank has been up for 8 days. is it possible the tank is cycled this fast? or should i do something else to spike the ammonia higher?
The levels of these would be a good indicator to wether or not your tank is cycled.
