The size of tank that you want is up to you. Either a 2.5 or a 5 gallon tank will be fine for a nano tank. Some people also consider anything smaller than (and including) a 10 gallon tank to be "nano".
Some common plants that are used in nano aquariums are: HC, HM, Dwarf Hairgrass, Blyxa japonica, and Glosso. Of course, the choice of plants depends on the amount of lighting (and fertilizers and CO2, subsequently) that you have.
As for fish and invertebrates, again, it depends on the size of your tank. Some fish for a nano tank are listed in the sticky at the top of this section. As for invertebrates, many people like RCS and/or CRS.
